Scientific studies in the USA, starting
in 1996, confirm that blueberries are particularly rich in biologically
active substances ("Rust-proofing agents for human cells"). No other
commercially available fruit even approaches their anthocyanin content.
Anthocyanin is one of the very complex group of secondary plant
materials that are estimated to number about 10,000. By interacting with
one another, these substances in the plant ensure a natural defence
against disease, health growth, and provide flavour, scent and colour.
The discovery of the exceptional importance of secondary plant
materials for human nutrition as well is approximately equivalent to the
discovery of the vitamins and minerals at the start of our century.
For fruit growers this means: use this favourable opportunity and employ
for your own product advertising the recommendations to eat more fruit
that are currently appearing in all of the media. At the same time,
attention should be drawn to the irreplaceable benefits of fresh fruit.
The interplay of the vegetable substances is extremely complicated and
cannot be manufactured industrially in the form of medicines.
